Directions for claiming continuing education credits:

1. Create an Avera CE Portal account if you do not already have one. If you already have an Avera CE Portal account, sign in.

2. Once logged in, click Content & Tests tab at the top of the South Dakota SBIRT Online Training Avera CE Portal landing page.

3. Verify attendance by click into the "Test".

4. Complete online evaluation.

5. A certificate with CE credits will be automatically emailed after completing the evaluation.


Overview
The South Dakota Department of Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health has created an online training to provide an understanding of SBIRT techniques and tools as well as the importance of integrating SBIRT into primary care systems. The purpose of the SBIRT Program is to implement Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment services for adults in primary care and community health settings for substance misuse and substance use disorders (SUD) as well as mental health concerns.

  1. Outline the basics of South Dakota SBIRT.
  2. Describe how the SBIRT module can be used in a primary care practice.
  3. Describe the initial SBIRT screening process and the possible need for a Brief Intervention, Brief Treatment, or Referral to Treatment.
  4. Describe Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the history of SBIRT.
  5. Describe the importance of integrating SBIRT into a primary care.
  6. Explain why SBIRT is an important component to have within primary care systems throughout South Dakota.
  7. Explain the significance of statistics regarding substance use and mental health issues within South Dakota.
  8. Explain the process of integrating the screenings into the office visit.
  9. Describe the process and purpose of use for the AUDIT-C (AUDIT-as needed), DAST-10, and PHQ-9.
  10. Identify additional support available for patients as it relates to the screening process.
  11. Outline the basics of a Brief Negotiated Interview as it applies to a Brief Intervention.
  12. Summarize the three models available when conducting a Brief Intervention.
  13. Explain the importance of using Motivational Interviewing when conducting a Brief Intervention.
  14. Explain the concept of Brief Treatment for a patient who falls in the harmful level of use.
  15. Describe the process of referring a patient for Brief Treatment.
  16. Describe the Integrated Change Therapy Model (ICT) as it relates to Brief Treatment.
  17. Explain the concept of Referral to Treatment for a patient who falls in the severe/dependent level of use.
  18. Describe the process of referring a patient to treatment.
  19. Recall the various substance use service levels of care.
