Registration Fee: $75 per participant

Cancellation Policy: No refunds will be given for any activity with registration fees $20 and under. A refund less 10% of registration fee will be given for cancellations received in writing to [email protected] prior to 5 business days of activity. Following this date, no refunds will be given but substitutions will be accepted.

This conference will not be provided via videoconference.


Overview
The U.S. Attorney's Office, District of South Dakota; Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation; and Avera assembled the leading experts to discuss the prevalence of addiction in American society. Presenters will share the latest research, real-world knowledge and solutions for treating addiction and helping families cope. Keynote speakers will be David and Nic Sheff, the subjects of the 2018 movie "A Beautiful Boy." The father and son will speak about their family's experience with addiction. Target Audience: Physicians, nurses, health care administrators, social workers, counselors, behavioral health administrators, attorneys, law enforcement, state officials, federal officials, local officials, tribal officials, victim service providers, educators, school administrators, coaches and coaching staff and the general public.

Objectives
  1. Explain the impact of substance use disorder on the addicted individual and the family unit. (David and Nic Sheff)
  2. Describe addiction and the characteristics that addicted patients display. (Skrajewski)
  3. Identify criteria to diagnose substance use disorders. (Skrajewski)
  4. Recognize the evidence illustrating addiction as a disease as opposed to addiction as a choice. (Skrajewski)
  5. List improvements in addiction education for medical students and professionals. (Skrajewski)
  6. Explain the challenges that alcoholics faced through history and the development of South Dakota's first privately funded, non-profit treatment center for alcoholism. (Glenn & Phyllis Jorgenson)
  7. Explore reentry programs designed to help returning citizens successfully 'reenter' society following incarceration. (Discussion Panel)
  8. Recognize the DSM-IV criteria for alcohol use disorders. (Hays)
  9. Identify the major medical consequences of alcohol use disorder. (Hays)
  10. Identify options for alcohol detoxification and pharmacology options. (Hays)
  11. Recognize the importance of identifying co-morbid conditions such as depressive and anxiety disorders. (Hays)
  12. Identify available resources available for substance use disorders. (Fisher-Clemens)
  13. Indicate personal and career background prior to addiction. (Weiss)
  14. Recognize factors that contributed to addiction and diversion. (Weiss)
  15. Identify addiction recovery opportunity and success. (Weiss)
  16. Describe tribal considerations concerning treatment of drug and alcohol abuse disorders. (Discussion Panel)
  17. Examine substance abuse disorder from the parental perspective, including education, obtaining resources, and removing disease stigma. (Kennecke)
  18. Identify approaches to offer hope and healing through identifying addiction and providing treatment to end the opioid crisis. (Kennecke)

Participants must attend both days to receive credit.

CME Accreditation Statement: 

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and polices of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Avera; United States Attorney's Office, District of South Dakota; and Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Avera is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Avera designates this educational activity for a maximum of 8.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CNE Accreditation Statement: 

Avera Health is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.  A total of 8.75 contact hours can be received upon completion of this activity. Attendance at the entire educational activity is required to receive contact hours.

Social Work Accreditation Statement:

Avera Health Provider #1029 is approved as a provider for continuing education by the South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners.  Social workers will receive 8.75 continuing education clock hours for participating in this course.

The South Dakota Board of Addiction and Prevention Professionals has approved this program for 8.25 Hours of Continuing Professional Training.

Counselor & Marriage and Family Therapists:

The South Dakota Board of Examiners for Counselors & Marriage and Family Therapists has approved this program for 10 hours of continuing education credit.

Nursing Facility Administrators:

Avera is a provider for the South Dakota Board of Nursing Facility Administrators.  This program is approved for 8.75 continuing education credits.
