Cancellation Policy: No refunds will be given for any activity with registration fees $20 and under. A refund less 10% of registration fee will be given for cancellations received in writing to [email protected] prior to 5 business days of activity. Following the date, no refunds will be given but substitutions will be accepted.

The Avera Sports Medicine Symposium has been developed to highlight current evidence-based information in orthopedics and sports medicine. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in lecture, question and answer, and hands-on learning opportunities throughout the two day symposium.

3. Discuss how exercise and diet affect blood pressure, blood sugar and cancer risk. (Buchanan)
4. Describe the initial evaluation and assessment of shoulder dislocations. (O'Brien)
5. Discover History and Physical exam finding to diagnose specific nerve entrapments. (Blake)
6. Discover History and Physical exam findings for common sports injuries. (Blake - a.m.)
7. Compare the timing and muscle activation patterns of the musculature surrounding the knee while running forward and backward on various inclines (Ferley)
8. Course participants will recognize post-concussion syndrome. (Rahn)
9. Discuss different sources on energy the body uses for fuel with exercise. (Buchanan)
10. Recognize how genetics can influence complex traits (Ehil)
11. Discover what is sleep and why is it important. (Hericks)
12. Define Femoroacetabular Impingement  (Diamond)
13. List the common types of non-arthritic cartilage lesions seen in younger athletic patients. (Liddell)
14. Identify significant abdominal injuries from sports related trauma. (Person)
15. Identify the best evidence related to rehabilitation for individuals who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament recontruction. (Osborn)
16. Describe the importance of load progression in lower quarter tendinopathy. (Ponstein)
17. Identify the difference between dry needling and acupuncture. (Tjeerdsma)

CME Accreditation Statement: 

Avera is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Avera designates this educational activity for a maximum of 11.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  

CNE Accreditation Statement: 

Avera Health is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. A total of 11.0 contact hours can be received upon completion of this education activity. Attendance at the entire educational activity is required to receive contact hours.

Athletic Trainers: 

Avera (BOC AP# P2910) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 11 EBP Category hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.

Chiropractor Credits:

The South Dakota Board of Chiropractic Examiners approves the 2019 Avera Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Symposium for 11 hours.
