This course offers learners a case study approach to learning about drug overdoses in the emergency setting. As drug overdose set all time records within the country, this course outlines the care and treatment. The learners will learn how to utilize the MATTERS acronym to assess, test and treat patients with a suspected drug overdose. Drugs to be covered include, but are not limited to alcohol, opioids, heroin, and methamphetamines'

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Avera and Avel eCARE. Avera is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Avera designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Avera Health is an Approved Provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. A total of 1.0 contact hours can be received upon completion of this education activity. Attendance at the entire educational activity is required to receive contact hours.

1. Identify a generalized approach to the assessment and care of the patient who has overdosed
2. Identify the signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication and withdrawal and medical management of patient
3. Identify signs and symptoms of opioid intoxication and medical management of patient
4. Identify signs and symptoms of stimulant intoxication and medical management of patient
5. Recognize other common drugs of abuse and signs and symptoms of overdose
