Overview
The 11th Annual USD Geriatric Symposium is an interprofessional educational activity designed to address emerging issues and evidence-based practices in the care of older adults. Through expert presentations, case-based discussions, and collaborative learning opportunities, healthcare team members will examine current approaches to dementia care, medication management, long-term care, palliative care, elder rights, and care for marginalized older adults. Participants will learn with, from, and about one another to strengthen team-based strategies that improve the quality, safety, and outcomes of geriatric patient care. The symposium will be available both in person and virtually.

Objectives
  1. Describe current updates on the state plan on dementia and field questions from the audience.
  2. Examine health disparities affecting marginalized older adults and identify strategies to promote equitable, person-centered care.
  3. Apply evidence-based medication management principles to optimize safety and quality of care for older adults.
  4. Recognize elder rights, legal considerations, and available resources that support long-term care planning and asset protection.
  5. Differentiate palliative care and hospice services and identify appropriate interventions to support quality of life for older adults and their families.
  6. Analyze factors that contribute to long-term care placement and identify strategies to support older adults across the continuum of care.
  7. Evaluate complex long-term care case scenarios and formulate interprofessional approaches to address patient needs and care transitions
  8. Integrate interprofessional perspectives and community resources to improve coordination, communication, and outcomes for older adults receiving long-term care services.

Accreditation

 

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Avera and USD. Avera is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

Credit Designations:

 

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 7.5 IPCE credits for learning and change. 

 

Medicine CME:  Avera designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Social Work: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Avera is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 7.50 Clinical continuing education credit(s).

 

Pharmacy CE: Avera designates this activity for 7.50 ACPE contact hour(s).  ACPE Universal Activity Number (UAN): JA0008079-9999-26-049-L01-P/ JA0008079-9999-26-049-L01-T.  Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Credit will be uploaded to the NABP CPE Monitor within 30 days after the activity completion.  Per ACPE rules, Avera does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested after the evaluation closes.  It is the responsibility of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to provide the correct information (NABP ID and DOB (MMDD) to receive credit.
