Avera Behavioral Health is hosting an addictions symposium on Wednesday March 25th, 2026 at The Hilton Garden Inn located downtown Sioux Falls. This one day event will bring in various speakers talking about topics surrounding addiction and its impact on those we serve.

1. Explore the principles and practices of harm reducation in substance use, challenging stigma and shifting the focus from abstinence-only models to person-centered approaches that meet individuals where they are at.
2. Participants will learn how to apply evidence-based strategies to enhance engagement, manage group dynamics, and foster mutual aid in group work practice. Through case scenarios, skill-building exercises, and open discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for leading trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented groups.
3. Participants will examine the factors that contribute to return to use—including trauma, stigma, and systemic barriers—and highlight strategies that promote resilience, early intervention, and sustained engagement.
4. Participants will learn about vicarious trauma of healthcare workers and how to develop a peer to peer wellness program.
5. Discuss the impact of harm reduction and low-threshold addiction treatment on improving whole person outcomes.
6. Discuss why collaboration with other mental health providers is needed to improve patient care.

Social Workers will receive 7.00 continuing education clock hour(s) for participating in this course.
	Social Work: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Avera is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive for 7.00 General continuing education credits.
