Professions - EMS, Nurse - RN, Nursing Facility Administrator, Physical Therapist, Physician

Objectives

  3. Discuss strategies utilized to most effectively care for the traumatically injured patient.
  4. Discuss hemorrhage control techniques when clinical resources are limited.
  5. Critique the multidisciplinary course of care for injured patients.
  6. Discuss how intoxicants including alcohol and methamphetamines affect patient assessment.
  7. Identify techniques to maintain staff safety when caring for the intoxicated patient.
  8. Discuss crime in the Sioux Falls area and how it impacts the medical community.

  14. Demonstrate appropriate options to stop the bleeding including holding direct pressure, packing the wound and application of a tourniquet.
  15. Identify the diagnostic features of pediatric shock and distinguish between various types based on key features, vital sign abnormalities, age-specific blood pressure ranges, and techniques for assessing end-organ perfusion such as capillary refill, mental status, and urine output.
  16. Understand the emergency department evaluation and initial management of a child with suspected shock consistent with current guidelines to facilitate early recognition and time-sensitive interventions, including obtaining cultures first, administering antimicrobial therapy, fluid resuscitation within 1 hour, vasopressor use, and adequate vascular access.
  17. Review ongoing management of pediatric septic shock in the critical care setting, including indications for rapid, bolus fluid resuscitation versus vasoactive medications after fluid refractory shock develops, goals for perfusion pressure and oxygenation, and techniques to monitor response to interventions.
