Overview
Delirium is an acute disorder of attention and cognition of people >65yrs of age and prevalence is estimated to be between 11-42% on medical wards. Prevalence is also high in long term care facilities. It can be a life threatening condition and can lead to complications such as malnutrition, pneumonia, pressure ulcers, weakness and decreased mobility and decreased function, falls and combative behavior, wandering and getting lost. This educational activity will review definitions, epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, recognition/diagnosis, practical treatment strategies and challenges/future research.

Objectives
Outcome:  100% of learners will demonstrate knowledge of delirium by passing post-test with score of ≥ 80%.

  1. Recognize signs of delirium.
  2. Differentiate delirium and dementia.
  3. Recognize acute medical issues, pharmacological management, physical and neurological changes that increase delirium.
