Overview
At the completion of this conference, the participant will be able to discuss current issues in the clinical care and education of persons with diabetes.

Objectives
  1. Review macronutrient recommendations of the 2019 American Diabetes Association Nutrition Consensus paper (Urbanski)
  2. Discuss eating patterns that can be utilized for the management of diabetes (Urbanski)
  3. Review nutrition recommendations, including vitamin, mineral and alcohol recommendations for individuals with diabetes (Urbanski)
  4. Discuss the effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy (Urbanski)
  5. Review the metabolic defects that lead to hyperglycemia (Hinnen)
  6. Describe therapies for type 2 diabetes, including their clinical application (Hinnen)
  7. Review considerations for managing the costs of diabetes medications and treatment (Bukovich)
  8. Describe the current recommendations for managing cardiovascular risks associated with diabetes (Bukovich)
  9. Identify strategies to enhance communication, collaboration and empowerment (Hinnen)
  10. Review case studies for coaching for independence through pattern management (Hinnen)
  11. Differentiate low carbohydrate versus very low carbohydrate eating plans for diabetes (Urbanski)
  12. Compare considerations in following low carbohydrate versus very low carbohydrate eating plans (Urbanski)
  13. Describe approaches for helping patients maintain low/very low carbohydrate eating plans (Urbanski)
  14. Identify classifications of hypoglycemia (Hinnen)
  15. Discuss hypoglycemia management, including signs/symptoms, treatment and new formulations of glucagon (Hinnen)
  16. Review hypoglycemia comparative data with insulins and other therapeutic choices (Hinnen)
  17. Describe the stages of diabetic nephropathy (Mattu)
  18. Discuss options for management of diabetic nephropathy (Mattu)
  19. Identify strategies for the prevention of diabetes-related kidney problems (Mattu)

Avera is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing education for physicians. Avera designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit per session . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CNE Accreditation Statement: 

Avera is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
